What is this all about? Plus the who, when, where (sort of) and why
Hello, and thanks for visiting! This site is run by Ryan Ross Smith (aka me) from my home in New York. I've been working with animated notation since about 2010/2011 and have created dozens of scores that utilize a variety of notational techniques (please see the 'all scores' page for examples). One of the hallmarks of these scores is that there is little to no coordination required between each player's part. My reasons for this approach are outlined in my 2016 PhD dissertation, the reading of which is certainly not required, but in short I was interested in using these animated notational approaches to generate rhythmically-complex music that was quite easy to sightread.
